How To Draw a Kitchen Lighting Plan

To do a kitchen lighting drawing plan start by accurately drawing your kitchen with room dimensions, cabinet layout, and appliance locations.

This plan can be just a lighting plan or the whole kitchen electrical plan.

Take your time and really think about the most convenient places to have the switches. The general room lighting will need to have a switch at the entrances to the kitchen, and are usually on a 3-way switch (two switches in different locations for the same lights). Also decide which lights are on a dimmer.

Task lighting is often switched close to where the work is going on so it is easy to turn on quick while working.

Draw all the light locations, note the type of light, and how they are switched on the drawing of the kitchen.

Do a different page listing the specs, type, size and bulb type of each of the lighting fixtures, this may affect the rough wiring. On this page also do a legend showing what your symbols mean on your plan, like S means switch and S3 means 3-way switch.

Sometimes while running the wire you discover a better, or easier way to switch the lighting so think of the plan in dynamic terms.
